Eurofins conducted a study to compare, on the basis of ability tests at use, the performances of certain cleaners for carpets and surfaces. The products used in this test was our Readymix Superclean (Green) Fragrance-Free Refill 2.5L (For Cleaning Products) and Dettol Anti-Bacterial Surface Cleanser. The study was based on stain removal efficiency on polypropylene carpet.
The products were tested using the following criteria:-
- 2g of soil
- 10 strokes with a sponge
- 2 minutes of action
- Finishing of the test with a vacuum cleaning.
According to the study carried out on cleaners for carpets and surfaces, the products were ranked as follows: Overall, Superclean and Dettol presented a comparable performance level, regarding the three assessed parameters (stain removal on carpets, detergent power and marks assessment).
Looking into the details:
- Regarding the cleaning performance on carpets, Superclean performed better than Dettol on the red wine stain but they also presented an equal performance on all the other tested stains.
- Regarding the detergent power, Superclean removed 40% of the test soil while Dettol removed 31% of the soil. However, they remained comparable (the performance gap used under their significant threshold).
- Both Superclean and Dettol obtained a very satisfactory performance level, leaving slightly visible marks.
Stains removal efficiency on polypropylene carpet - 6 stains - 3 replicates
This test consisted of assessing the efficiency of carpet stain removers.
Pre-soiled polypropylene carpets (wine, cherry, polish, coffee, mustard and ink) were treated with the product according to the available instructions.
Visual assessment of the material is carried out in a standard light cabinet by 3 graders. Both products are compared as per Schaeffe scale:
- 0: No difference
- ± 1: Very slight difference
- ± 2: Slight difference
- ± 3: Strong difference
- ± 4: Very strong difference
The sign of the grade indicated the direction of the preference; in favour or dis-favour of each product.
The results were the average of the grades from each grader and for each replicate.
Detergent power Household cleaner (neat) - 3 replicates
This test consisted of assessing the detergent power of neat household cleaners.
A defined quantity of greasy and particulate dirt was spread onto steel plates. After an ageing phase in the oven, the plates were immersed for a defined time into a stirring bath, which contained the neat product. Once cleaned, the plates were rinsed, drained and then dried in the oven.
The detergent power was defined by the percentage of stain removal, gravimetrically assessed (average of 3 trials).
Marks assessment
This test consisted of assessing the marks left by the product.
This evaluation was carried out on black tiles for every product except from wipes, which are tested on mirrors.
After application and drying of the product, the materials were visually assessed in a light cabinet according to a scale of 1 to 5 as follows:-
5: absence of marks
4: slightly visible marks
3: visible marks
2: very visible marks
1: opaque marks
3 replicates are carried out.
According to this study, the following points were highlighted:
Stains removal efficiency on polypropylene carpet - 6 stains - 3 replicates
Overall, both Superclean and Dettol presented a comparable stain removal efficiency.
During this test, Superclean performed better than Dettol on the red wine stain but they both presented an equal performance on all the other tested stains.
Detergent power Household cleaner (neat) - 3 replicates
NB: 2 products were differentiated from a gap of least equal to 15% (= significance threshold).
Both Superclean and Dettol presented a comparable detergent power.
Marks assessment
NB: 2 products were differentiated from a gap at least equal to 1 point (= significance threshold).
Both Superclean and Dettol obtained a very satisfactory performance level, leaving slightly visible marks.
Conclusion
Superclean is the better choice for anyone looking for an effective way to remove a red wine stain. Further tests, conducted using both products, have proven that our Superclean can also remove more soil than Dettol.
